Known to many as piles, haemorrhoids are abnormally engorged and swollen blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum. These may rupture and cause bleeding or slip out of place during defecation. Haemorrhoids cause discomfort and itching, affecting a person's daily lifestyle. This is when treatment may be required, and is referred to as haemorrhoidal disease.

While haemorrhoids can be both painful and embarrasing at the same time, they can be treated and managed effectively.

• medications such as daflon© may improve symptoms such as pain, itch and bleeding as well as reduce frequency and intensity of future haemorrhoidal episodes.
